Iran, the Netherlands sign MoU on water, energy

Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian and the Netherlands Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment Melanie Schultz Van Haegen-Maas Geesteranus signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on water and energy on Sunday.
Chitchian said that cooperation on environment, water and energy, industry and agriculture would help boost relations between the two countries.
He said that banking cooperation would serve to eliminate the obstacles on the way of economic cooperation.
The minister said that Iran has faced with 15 years constant drought, so shortage of water is a serious and permanent threat to Iran.
Given to valuable experience and technologies of the Netherlands in the field of water, Chitchian called on the Dutch companies to bid for the tenders Iran has declared.
Around 3000 Iranian experts have passed training courses on water management in the Netherlands educational institutes last year upon an agreement signed between UNESCO and International Hydrological Program (IHP).
In spite of 76,000 megawatts power plants capacities, Iran intends to generate 5,000 megawatts electricity from renewable energy power plants in addition to 12,000 megawatts generated from hydro-electric power plants.
Iran already concentrated on setting up large power plants, but, currently Iran prefers small power plants to be able to increase capacity of the power plants by 26,500 megawatts in next five years.
Chitchian said that the Dutch companies may also have more active participation in Irans electricity market.
Ms. Melanie Schultz van Haegen-Maas said that by signing the MoU bilateral cooperation between the two countries on water technologies will be strengthened.
She said that one third of the Netherlands is under the sea and the country is under constant threat of flashflood.
The Netherlands may have good cooperation with Iran in the field of desalination projects and usage of wastewaters in the sector of agriculture.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the meeting, a contract between a Dutch company and Irans Renewable Energy Organization was signed on construction of a solar power plant.
Trade between Iran and the Netherlands stood at 640 million last year.
The Netherlands is the second largest agricultural crops exporter in the world after the United States.
